There’s been a major shift in the denim world in 2022, with some news outlets stating that the long-standing crowd favourite skinny high-rise jeans were officially dead. While we wouldn’t go so far as to declare any fashion staple “dead” – if you love it, then go for it! – the Trove team is looking forward to adding a few new denim silhouettes to our wardrobes.
Today, we’re taking a look at three 2022 denim trends and how to wear them.
Bootcut denim is making a comeback this fall. As the name indicates, bootcut jeans are meant to be worn over the tops of your boots or shoes, making it easy to pair this style with any footwear. Finish off your outfit with a fitted blazer for a breezy business casual look, or choose a cropped pair as you transition from summer to fall.
Another thing you might spot on the streets this fall? Flares! Flares make a comeback every few decades, and with good reason: this leg-lengthening style is flattering on every body. Balance your look with a cropped or fitted top and try out a raw hem look for a contemporary spin on this vintage silhouette.
We won’t try to convince any millennials to return to the low-rise denim trend, but if this Y2K throwback intrigues you, keep an eye out for a slouchy silhouette that feels balanced for your proportions.
The weather might be cooling down, but we’re still susceptible to damage from UV rays, so don’t forget to continue protecting yourself from sun damage! Lean into the 70s aesthetic of denim flares by pairing them with large sunglasses and a floppy-brimmed hat, which are both trendy and practical.
Denim skirts in every length are back in full force in 2022. Maxi skirts are particularly trendy and easy to style; pair them with your favourite t-shirt and sneakers for a weekend brunch, or with a tucked-in blouse and flats for casual work meetings.
To keep mini and midi denim skirt styles feeling fresh, focus on pairing these pieces with colour rather than piling on too many accessories. Coco Chanel’s advice to remove one accessory before leaving the house rings true here!
Why Buy Secondhand/Vintage Denim?
As we’ve written about in the past, there are many benefits to buying secondhand clothing, including a more affordable price point and access to unique styles. However, the biggest benefit of secondhand shopping is that it reduces our impact on the planet.
It’s hard to understate the importance of buying secondhand denim whenever possible. Levi's estimates that the entire lifecycle of one pair of their 501 jeans uses 3,781 liters of water, which is equivalent to what a single US household uses in three days. By doing our part to support the circular economy of denim, we can interrupt the need to create new items and prevent clothing from ending up in landfills or being incinerated.
Tip: If you’re switching up your denim styles this season, consider consigning the pieces you no longer wear with us! Trove Fashion accepts gently-used clothing and accessories. Visit our website or visit us in store for details.
