Embracing “Quiet Luxury” This Summer

2022 was the summer of “Coastal Grandma,” with an emphasis on breezy comfort and casual style. Suddenly, everyone was modelling their looks after their favourite Nancy Meyers heroine. While this comfy trend is still making the rounds this year, there’s a new aesthetic that’s murmuring its way through the fashion world: quiet luxury.

What is quiet luxury? This aesthetic is trending after a dramatic final season of Succession, which helped popularize the concept. According to Women’s Wear Daily, quiet luxury refers to “investment pieces that are timeless and of high-quality crafted materials.”

Ultimately, quiet luxury is less of a trend and more of a lifestyle; it’s less model-off-duty and more CEO-off-duty. It’s exemplified by Succession’s Shiv Roy, and today, we’re helping you get the look for less.

Curating your closet

Embracing quiet luxury doesn’t mean replacing everything in your closet. In fact, you likely have several pieces that already fit the bill. To master the art of quiet luxury, focus on these two aspects:

  • Good construction: Look for pieces with classic lines and timeless embellishments. Cinched-waist blazers, crisp button-downs, and relaxed trousers are the hallmarks of quiet luxury.

  • Luxe materials: High-end materials such as silk, cashmere, and leather are timeless, and they’ve very durable with the proper upkeep. These materials look expensive and retain their shape well, even if purchased secondhand.

Acquiring new items

If you’d like to add a few new pieces to your wardrobe to embrace the quiet luxury lifestyle, start by heading to your nearest consignment store. By shopping secondhand, you free up funds to invest in high-quality items, such as the luxe materials mentioned above.

Consignment shopping can also help you access the dream piece that you’ve been eyeing, whether it’s a tailored jacket or a luxury brand tote for your lunch pail. And hey, don’t let the cast of Succession dictate which handbag you choose to carry – go with what makes you happy! The best style is one that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Tailoring existing pieces

With quiet luxury, it’s all about the fit! Proportion is the name of the game. If you love a piece but the silhouette isn’t quite right, reach out to your local tailor for assistance. Tailoring your existing wardrobe is also kinder to the environment, because it extends the life of the pieces in your closet. When it fits well and looks great, you’re likely to hang on to it and keep wearing it over and over again.
