Maximalism Trend, Winter Edition

Recently, we wrote about our resolution to be more adventurous with our fashion choices in 2023. Maximalism is on our radar this year, thanks to super-popular shows like Emily in Paris. We love the idea of eye-catching looks, but is it really possible to embrace maximalism in the wintertime? Read on to find out!

What is maximalism?

Maximalism fashion focuses on expressing yourself using colours and patterns that make your heart sing. It’s often defined as bold or bright, but we like to think of it as eye-catching – anything that makes you go wow!

How can I embrace maximalist fashion?

A recent MasterClass article outlines the four keys to maximalism:

Layering

Layering is a very important part of maximalist fashion, because each piece helps build up the interest. That said, layering can be tricky during the colder months because the weather can fluctuate quite a bit throughout the day. So, what’s the key to avoid looking like Joey from Friends?

Make sure that your base layer works for your primary activity of the day, even if you end up removing a piece or two. For example, if you’re spending most of your time in an overheated office, start with comfortable lighter pieces, then build up the interest with jewelry, a cool cardigan, or a print scarf. Opt for outer layers that are easy to remove if you get too warm.

Balance

Balance can apply to your silhouette as well as the colours and fabrics you’ve selected. If you’re wearing a piece with lots of volume, like an oversized button-down, pair it with a tapered pant to make it feel intentional. When it comes to colour palette, you can make a balanced maximalist statement by adding vibrant colours and prints to an otherwise neutral outfit.

Colours

A pop of colour is always a good idea! If your existing wardrobe skews towards minimalist neutrals, use accessories to make a statement. We love introducing chunky sneakers, bright bags, or animal prints to shake up an outfit.

The best part? Accessories are so easy to buy secondhand, and you can easily consign them when they no longer suit your style.

Experimentation

The best part of maximalism is that you get to try new things and express yourself! You can start small, with a bold accessory or two, and try different combinations until you perfect your own personal style. Choose pieces that make you happy, and when you’re done with them, make an appointment to consign with Trove and come find your next treasure in our store!
