Shopping Secondhand for the Holiday Season

With the holidays right around the corner, secondhand gifting is a hot topic this season. This shift in consumer values is driven by an ongoing desire for both financial and environmental sustainability. According to a recent GlobalData survey, nearly half of respondents indicated that they plan to buy secondhand gifts this year, with the most common secondhand gift being clothing.

Secondhand clothing has been experiencing a sharp increase in popularity over the past few years, with the global clothing resale market is predicted to grow by 31% to $182.4 billion by the end of 2022. With more and more people shopping secondhand for environmental and financial reasons, there’s no longer a stigma attached to gifting non-new clothing and accessories.

Today, the Trove team is sharing our favourite tips for finding the perfect secondhand gift for everyone on your list this year!

Make a list and do your research
Jot down a list of your gift recipients, then spend some time thinking about what you’d like to give to each person on your list. When you shop with a well-researched list, you’re more likely to find what you want and avoid overspending.

Have a sneaky look at their social media to see if you can identify thoughtful gifting opportunities. Maybe your friend has been going on long nature walks lately and would enjoy a warm hat for the cold weather, or your sister is going back to the office and would appreciate a trendy new bag to help her feel more put-together. Your friends and family will enjoy the time and energy you put into finding the perfect gift for their lifestyle.

Don’t be afraid to regift
Regifting items used to be considered a social faux pas, but with shoppers looking to cut waste this holiday season, the stigma has faded away. In fact, the same GlobalData survey indicates that 60% of consumers believe that secondhand gifts are more socially acceptable than they were five years ago.

Look around your home for items in great giftable condition; perhaps you have a scarf with tags on or a rarely-used cookbook that a friend would enjoy. Wrap your gift with love and include a thoughtful card. The only rule to follow when regifting is to use common sense: don’t give the gift back to the person who originally gifted it to you!
