The Trove Guide to Cold Weather Wear

Here at Trove Fashion, we don’t get sad when the weather plummets overnight, because we know what it means: it’s outerwear season!

With a world of colours, fabrics, and styles, winter outerwear is a chance to literally wear your personality on your sleeve. Today, we’re sharing our favourite cold weather wear to help you enjoy the magic of the colder season.

Reach for the right fabric

The right fabric is the key to staying warm from October to April. The Trove team loves natural textiles such as cashmere and wool, which trap body heat to keep you toasty all day long. A longer coat made with these materials is a classic and makes a great addition to your slow fashion wardrobe.

A faux leather bomber or cropped jacket is versatile for different winter outings, and since faux leather is fairly water-resistant, you don’t have to worry about any nasty weather surprises. Win-win!

Finally, for those really frigid days, nothing beats down or down-alternative puffer coats. Down ratings can be confusing, so here’s a trick: down fill power means how much space 1 ounce of down can fill, so 1oz of 500-fill-power down will loft to 500 cubic inches. Meanwhile, down fill weight refers to how much actual down is in the jacket itself. In either case, a higher number is better, so check both numbers when shopping.

Accessorize from head to toe

The right footwear is the key to a successful winter outfit. To keep our feet dry in the rain and snow, the Trove team loves classic brands like Sorel or Pajar. A rubber sole doesn’t have to look clunky – these boots by European brand ONLY have a chunky sole to keep out the rain while adding a touch of rugged style to any look.

Top it off with some colour

The colder months are an opportunity to accessorize from head to toe, and we’re leaning into maximalism again this year! Accessories make a huge statement, especially when they have a neutral canvas (like a winter coat). We love introducing chunky sneakers, bright bags, or animal prints to shake up a winter outfit.

Warm beanies come in every colour, so keep a couple of options in your closet to pair with different outerwear options. Likewise, there’s no need to limit your bag choices in the wintertime – a darker bag looks great against a light-coloured jacket, while a bright patent leather piece brings a pop of colour to darker outerwear.

Trove Tip: We have a great selection of faux fur vests in store, so we’re no longer accepting this type of consignment. We are accepting a limited range of faux fur jacket items with Sherpa details, and super-long and/or oversized puffers (although maybe not quite as large as this one!).
