All About Barbiecore

As anticipation builds for the Barbie movie (in theaters later this week), you might have heard the term “Barbiecore.” According to Etsy trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson, “'Barbiecore' is all about embracing vibrant hues -- particularly the doll's signature hot pink -- in everyday life.”

Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, is responsible for breathing life into this fun trend. Robbie has been wearing iconic Barbie looks on the red carpet for weeks, and her pink-forward aesthetic has become the style of the summer. Today, we’re taking a look at some of our favourite Barbie red carpet looks and sharing tips on how to incorporate Barbiecore into your day-to-day wardrobe.

Classic Stripes

When the first Barbie launched in 1959, she wore a black-and-white striped swimsuit and black peep-toe pumps. Her hair (available in blonde or brunette) was in a signature topknot ponytail. Robbie wore this classic midcentury look for a press appearance in Australia.

To capture the classic elegance of the first Barbie, think stripes! Reach for a colour-blocked dress to wear to the office or pair a timeless striped boatneck top with jeans for a casual evening out by the water. Complete the look with a high pony for the perfect subtle nod to Barbie #1.

“Totally Hair” is the highest-selling Barbie doll in history, with 10 million dolls flying off shelves after its release in 1992. When Margot Robbie recreated this look for the Barbie photocall in Mexico City, she wore her hair in crimped waves and completed the look with an Emilio Pucci minidress.

If you’re not in a rush to get your crimper out of storage, you can channel Totally Hair Barbie by accenting your outfit with a printed scarf. Fun patterns and bold colours can add a touch of mod interest to an otherwise neutral outfit without feeling overwhelming. Click here to see a few of our favourite scarf-tying tricks!

Pink for Days

No Barbiecore look would be complete without Barbie’s signature colour: pink! The good news is that pink is flattering on all skin tones, so there’s a shade for everyone, whether it’s subtle blush or vibrant magenta.

Margot Robbie has worn lots of pink Barbie looks on the red carpet, but our favourite recreation is the Day-to-Night Barbie look seen above. The day look includes a soft pink power suit, briefcase, and a statement hat, which transforms into a glitter top & tulle skirt combo for night. There’s tons of inspiration in these two looks, so just pick the one that works for you:

  • A wide-brimmed hat is perfect for lunch on the patio

  • A voluminous skirt is so fun for date night

  • Sparkly accessories will help you shine on the dance floor
