How to Consign Like a Pro
According to a recent report published by the fashion resale platform thredUP, the global secondhand market is picking up steam: 1 in 3 apparel items bought in the last 12 months was a secondhand item, and the global secondhand market is projected to reach $350 billion by 2027. Shoppers and sellers alike are motivated by a joint desire to reduce their carbon footprint while managing economic uncertainty.
Participating in the secondhand apparel economy has never been easier! At Trove Fashion, we believe that secondhand clothing is a powerful way to reduce waste and pollution. Today, we’re sharing our tips on how to work with a local consignment shop to sell your items and reduce your fashion footprint.
What is a consignment shop?
A consignment shop (like Trove Fashion!) is a store that sells secondhand items on behalf of the original owner, who receives a percentage of the selling price. Essentially, you bring your gently used clothing and accessories, the store sells the items on your behalf, and you split the profits.
What should I consign?
Consignment stores are usually looking for items that fall into two categories: classic clothing and accessories that never go out of style, and quality on-trend pieces for the coming season. Keep this in mind when you’re going through your closet! If you’re not sure what to bring in, check out online trend reports for inspiration. The Trove Fashion website also has a detailed list of what we will and will not accept.
When should I consign?
For a successful consignment appointment, be mindful of the calendar when bringing in your pieces. Most consignment stores keep items for about 3 months and take in seasonal items at least 1 or 2 months before the season begins. A consignment shop also needs time to sort, price, and photograph items (if selling online).
When planning your consignment appointment, think about what’s likely to sell in the coming weeks. That means bringing in winter jackets around Thanksgiving and flowy summer dresses when there’s still snow on the ground. It may seem counterintuitive to bring in spring pastels in the middle of a snowstorm, but that’s how it works!
How can I get the most out of my consignment experience?
Here are a few tips when preparing for a consignment appointment:
Check the condition of each item and set aside items that have damage or stains as these won’t be accepted
Make any necessary repairs to buttons or zippers to get them into consignment condition
Launder all items prior to consigning and make sure that shoes and accessories are free of marks or scuffs
Iron or steam your items and fold them neatly
If you have pets, use a lint roller to remove any animal fur on your pieces prior to bringing them in
Bring in certificates of authenticity for designer pieces if you have them
Pack your items in tote bags and head into the store!
