Summer 2021 trends we can get behind: Pastels, Maxi-Dresses, and Poplin Shirts

Like many of our readers, we have already lived 90s fashion and seeing it come back as a major trend for 2021 is a bit anxiety-inducing. However, there are some great trends for summer 2021 that we can totally get behind. Namely, some reimagined classics like poplin shirts and maxi dresses, and playful pastel colours.

Pastels
This year we are seeing people take monochromatic styling to a whole other level. Monochromatic outfits are when your entire outfit is the same colour, tone, or family of colours. We saw this a lot with white, beige, and caramel colours last year and for the summer it’s coming back with lilac, baby blue, and shades of pale green.

How can you incorporate this trend into your summer wardrobe? Lean into playful colours! These are great pieces to buy second-hand and you will find no shortage of pastel colours at thrift stores or consignment stores like Trove. When shopping for this trend, look for solid colours and colour-block pieces rather than busy prints.

Maxi-Dresses
It’s no secret that we love maxi-dresses! They are a comfortable and breezy summer outfit that does not require much styling. We have been seeing a lot of A-line silhouettes and minimalistic slip dresses. These dresses are so versatile. You can belt it to define your waistline, layer a cropped knit or jacket on top, or protect your shoulders with a button up tied at the waist. Look for fabric that moves well and is not too stiff - this will be the most comfortable and flattering on every body type!

How can you incorporate this trend into your summer wardrobe? You likely already have it hanging in your closet! Maxi-dresses are not a new trend, but the romantic and effortless look of a maxi-dress is having a moment right now. To beat the summer heat, linen will be your best friend. For a polished day to night look, a silk (or imitation silk) slip dress can be paired with white sneakers and a jean jacket during the day, and heeled sandals in the evening.

Prints we have been loving:

  • Small floral print

  • Pastel colours

  • Gingham

Poplin Shirts
Poplin shirts are your classic collared button-up. A timeless piece and a wardrobe staple year round. This year, we are seeing some fun styling hacks, courtesy of TikTok. A crisp white poplin shirt is a wardrobe staple akin to a good pair of jeans, a plain whit tee, or the little black dress. It’s suitable for every occasion! We are especially loving the preppy, Ralph-Lauren or J Crew style of a light blue or blue and white-striped poplin with white jeans topped with a trench.

How can you incorporate this trend into your summer wardrobe? Buy once, wear forever. A high-quality, well-made poplin shirt should last you many wears if you take good care of it and follow the washing instructions from the manufacturer.

Other honourable mentions on this years list of trends:

We are happy to report that tie dye isn’t going anywhere.

Matching sets and loungewear sets are still having a moment. Pair your best loungewear set with some sneakers, top with a structured trench, and you have an urban look to run your errands.

Colourful knitwear vests make a cute cottage-core addition to your wardrobe and make a great transitional piece!

Puff-sleeves are a fun, playful trend that are fitting in with the ultra-romantic, whimsical vibes we can’t get enough of this season.
